Why monthly exclusion screening matters
The OIG adds hundreds of names to its exclusion list every month. If an excluded person works on claims paid by Medicare or Medicaid, a practice can owe back every payment plus penalties. Screening at hire and monthly after that is the standard most state Medicaid programs expect.
Frequently asked questions
What does this free check cover?
It looks up the NPI in the CMS National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) to confirm the number is active and shows the taxonomy and license on file. It also searches the HHS-OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
How often should providers be screened for exclusions?
CMS and most state Medicaid programs expect practices to screen every provider and staff member against the OIG list before hiring and monthly after that. Billing federal programs for an excluded person can lead to repayment and civil penalties.
Is this the same as primary source verification?
It uses the same public primary sources (NPPES and OIG LEIE). For full credentialing you also verify state licenses, DEA, board certification and malpractice history; Verivane tracks all of those.
Can Verivane run this every month automatically?
Yes. Verivane checks every provider against the NPI registry, OIG and SAM.gov each month and alerts you if anything changes.
Monitor every provider, every month.
NPI, OIG, SAM.gov and state license checks with alerts when something changes.
